POLICE officers seized up to 300 cannabis plants at a bungalow in a cul-de-sac on Thursday morning.

Neighbours say men and women of Oriental appearance have been coming and going from the property in Stour Close, Chartham, near Canterbury, for the past two months but no one was home when officers entered the property at 7.45am.

No arrests were made at the time but the plants and hydroponics equipment were found in different rooms. Police say the plants had a street value of around £4,000.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "When they first moved in I heard a lot of banging and thought they were putting up book shelves or something."

She added: "It is very surprising to find out this is going on in the street."

The strike came as a result of a tip-off from a nearby resident and is being hailed by officers as a neighbourhood success story.

PC Nick Bell said: "We are pleased with the results of the raid as it came as a result of information we received from a villager and a period of intelligence gathering.

"Through our neighbourhood teams we want people to feel they can come to us with anything – no matter how small or silly they think it might be – and we will follow it up."

The bungalow is believed to be owned by a villager but was leased by tenants. Ten officers were involved in the raid and the plants were taken from the scene to be destroyed.

Village police community support officer Paul Rigden said: "I have been in the job for about seven months and this is one of the success stories so far."
