POLICE are today still searching for an armed robber who attacked a jeweller’s shop in Birchington.

A man in his late 30s walked in to the shop in Station Road, at 5pm on Friday, just as staff were locking up. He jumped over the counter and grabbed a female member of staff.

Her male colleague came from the back of the shop and grappled with the man. During the struggle the shop worker suffered a small cut to his neck, believed to have been caused by a blade. The thief fled empty-handed, pursued by the shopworker.

As they ran, members of the public helped chase the man, but he fled down an alleyway towards All Saints' Church. Witnesses report seeing a 10-inch blade in the man’s hand, made from a “dull metal”.

Police say the man was dressed distinctively and hope someone can identify him. He was about 5ft 8in tall, and slim with facial stubble and a ruddy complexion.

He was wearing a royal blue cap with a peak and earflaps, tied under the chin, and wraparound, frameless glasses, described as “similar to safety glasses”. He was also wearing a royal blue jacket, royal blue trousers, blue trainers and gloves.
