CHURCHES are on an asbestos alert after the potentially lethal substance was found at a village church.

The discovery came following routine maintenance work on the organ at St Mary’s Church, Hunton.

The asbestos was found in the blower cabinet that supplies air to the pipes to produce sound. The church was closed immediately.

Following the discovery by specialists from Essex-based church organ builders Martin K Cross, air tests were carried out by asbestos consultants, who detected dangerous levels of fibres of the potentially cancer-causing substance.

The church will remain closed until further notice while specialists decide what course of action to take.

The Rev Peter Walker, rector of Hunton, Linton, Coxheath, East Farleigh and West Farleigh, said parishioners were naturally distressed by the news.

He said: "We are currently taking advice on the matter and in the meantime, services will continue in the nearby village hall."

The discovery has prompted the Diocese of Rochester to alert all parishes in Maidstone and West Kent.

Geoff Marsh, assistant diocesan secretary, said: "We will be sending a letter which will give information on where to go

for professional advice, they will then need to work with their local advisors to identify whether asbestos is present and what course of action is necessary."
