A WOMAN is today still in hospital with burns following an incident at a flat in Strood which claimed the life of her husband.

The man, who has not yet been named by police, is believed to have suffered a single stab wound to the neck.

The burns the woman suffered burns during the incident are thought to have been caused by boiling water.

Neighbours in Allington Drive reported hearing shouting from a woman before seeing at least five police cars, two ambulances and a paramedic car rush to the area at about 11pm on Wednesday. The emergency services entered a flat in a block of four properties.

One neighbour said: "They are a lovely couple with lovely kids, including a baby boy. Late on Wednesday night I heard a couple of bangs and a woman screaming 'help me, help me'. There had been some rowing beforehand, but I don't know what was going on.

"After that, police cars and ambulances began arriving and the whole area was cordoned off."

Another neighbour said following the incident a woman had been seen going in to a nearby house, and had later been taken away by ambulance. She did not seem to be badly hurt as she was able to walk to the ambulance.

Following initial treatment at Medway Maritime Hospital, the woman was transferred to a specialist burns unit at East Grinstead in Sussex.

The man was also taken by ambulance to Medway Maritime Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A woman who lives opposite the house where the incident took place said they were a very private family who kept themselves to themselves.

Police investigating the incident said they were continuing to talk to family members and friends to build up a picture of what may have happened in the house.

A spokesman said: "It would appear that the injuries sustained have resulted from a domestic incident. No arrests have been made and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident at the present time."
