A Kent scientist's award-winning invention designed to end world
hunger is being shipped to Kenya today.

Alex Bushell hopes to transform food production with SolarGrow 1
- a solar-powered mobile plant factory developed at Kent Science
Park, in Sittingbourne.

The greenhouse, which fits a shipping container, can grow almost
any type of seeded crop, in any environment, offering ready-to-eat
produce in just seven days.

The idea came from Mr Bushell’s research in Kenya – one of many
countries hit by natural disaster and famine.

He said: "We're looking to feed people full stop - we need to
make them self sufficient.

"This can be grown anywhere, you can literally start on an
airport runway."

SG1 is fully habitable with toilet, shower and detachabletent.
It comes with "plug and go" deep well pumps and a rain collection
system - and can even desalinate seawater.

Mr Bushell added: "We experiment by growing crops in the
smallest possible confines and the smallest amount of soil and
we've not even treated them with herbicides or compost."

Mr Bushell set up Boundless Horizons to develop and market the
potentially world changing innovation, recently named British and
World Invention of The Year.

The product already has three other contracts in Saudi Arabia,
to grow off the country's salt marshes, Tanzania and
Brazil.
