Being named the club’s player of the year on Sunday was a big thing for me – even if, perhaps, that didn’t come across to those supporters who were there on the night.
I’m not one for big speeches – I prefer to let my actions do the talking – which is why my acceptance speech was pretty short.
Although my English is OK, I’m not sure it would stand up to a long speech.
The most important thing was to thank all of my team-mates, because you cannot win anything without the support of your colleagues and also the fans.
The fans have been brilliant ever since I arrived at the club four years ago. They have a nice song for me, which is great to hear ringing around The Valley.
I was the runner-up last season, so to win the trophy gave me a fantastic feeling. It’s great to know that the fans appreciate your efforts.
I always try every Saturday and Tuesday on the pitch to give that love back to the supporters and give everything for the Charlton shirt. That’s why I was so excited on Sunday and that’s another reason why my speech was so short – I don’t have any words to explain how much I love this club.
I’ve also been named captain for a few matches recently, another great honour, and I hope the supporters know just how much all these things mean to me.
A lot of them were asking me at Sunday’s dinner whether I will be at the club again next season because my contract runs out this summer.
The honest answer is that I don’t know.
The club have made it clear that they are not going to discuss new contracts with senior players until the end of the season, which is fine, so we will have to see then.
Who knows what the club will do over the summer? We had new owners and a new manager at the start of the year and I’m sure they will want to stamp their mark on the club over the next few months.
But if it was up to me, I would be at Charlton next season.
It’s the last game of the season on Saturday, against Hartlepool, when I’m available again after a suspension I didn’t feel I deserved and the perfect way to end what everyone knows has been a disappointing campaign would be with a win.
Victory would go a little way toward repaying fans for their tremendous
support and leave everyone looking forward to what we hope will be a promotion campaign next term.
