I made my second start as a Charlton player last weekend, and things went reasonably well, even if the match ended in defeat.
I don’t think we deserved to lose against Huddersfield, but that’s the way things are going for us at the moment.
We’ve looked a lot more solid as a team over the past few matches, and we haven’t given much away.
We also created a number of chances against one of the sides still pushing for automatic promotion, but that doesn’t really matter when you come away with nothing from the game.
On a personal level, it was important for me to get another 90 minutes.
I’ve signed a short-term deal, and, after missing a lot of this season, I need to play and show what I’m capable of.
I signed for a Turkish club, Genclerbirligi, last summer after leaving Heart of Midlothian, but the week before the start of the season I had a problem with my ankle. I had an operation in London and did all my rehab in Edinburgh, but I wasn’t paid at all.
After speaking with the Professional Footballers’ Association in Scotland, we cancelled my contract because they had breached it by not paying me, and now I’m taking them to FIFA to get the money I’m owed. I’m told it could take around a year to sort it out, which isn’t ideal, but I’ve got to get on with my career.
Whether that continues to be at The Valley remains to be seen. I came back to England and wanted to get back into football as soon as possible, but neither side wanted to commit to a long contract because I’ve been out for quite a while. However, the end of the season will be here soon and that’s the best time for us to sit down and talk.
For the time being, I just want to help the club as much as possible and try to finish the season on something of a high.
There was a lot of talk about Huddersfield’s winning goal last Saturday, but Kyel Reid put his hands up to stop the ball hitting his face and, by the letter of the law, the referee was probably right to award another free-kick.
Unfortunately, we were punished and sometimes in football you don’t get what you deserve.
We have to keep doing what we’re doing, though. This weekend is going to be a busy one with two games in three days, away at Bristol Rovers and at home to Rochdale, but it’s also a good opportunity to get a couple of wins on the board, even if Rovers are fighting to avoid relegation and Dale need to win to further their play-off ambitions.
Everyone wants to end the season in better spirits, from the players to the fans, so that’s our aim.
