One of the strangest things about being a footballer is having people regularly writing about you and often knowing more about an aspect of your game that you do yourself!
This was re-inforced earlier this week when I heard an interesting stat about me following the win against Hartlepool United on Saturday.
Of course, I scored the second goal at Victoria Park, and that was my second goal this season after I also scored against Wycombe Wanderers.
But while I knew I was on a good run – I ended last season by scoring twice in the final three games – it took a bit of research from someone else at the club to reveal exactly how good.
Apparently, I’ve scored nine goals in my last 18 league games (one goal every two games) since I’ve been playing left midfield, which is a great ratio for a midfielder and is very pleasing.
I love scoring goals and everyone in the team knows they are expected to contribute on that front this season, including the defenders – and Christian Dailly and Miguel Llera made a good start against Wycombe.
I was also told my record when I’ve played in centre midfield, which is six goals in 27 games. This is interesting, although statistics never really tell the full story.
I played in the centre when I joined the club last year and when the team was struggling, while my move to the left more or less coincided with an all-round improvement by the team, which certainly gave me a greater opportunity to get on the scoresheet.
For my part, I have always said I prefer playing in the centre because you are more involved. I feel more comfortable there but, having said that, we need someone to slot in on the left.
The manager’s asked me to do a job, I’m happy to do anything he asks, and the stats show it’s working!
Saturday’s win against Hartlepool also showed the hard work that we are putting in during training is paying dividends.
The previous week, against Wycombe, we struggled to hold on to a two-goal lead and things got pretty frantic near the end of the game as they sought an equaliser.
On Saturday, we were again 2-0 ahead inside 30 minutes, but although our away form hasn’t been the greatest in recent times, we produced a really professional performance, and that really pleased the manager.
We were always in control of the game, and while it’s natural that the opposition will get one or two chances, we also looked like adding to our own tally, and it was as comprehensive an away win as you will see.
There were more than 500 fans cheering us on at Victoria Park, and another 3,000 or so following us to Leyton Orient on Tuesday, so things are going well. It’s our job to make sure that continues.
