An investigation into how two police dogs died in a hot car is looking into their handler's actions.

The policeman in charge of the dogs, which died in an unventilated car during the heatwave, is believed to have tried to commit suicide.

The working dogs, including a German shepherd puppy, were found collapsed at the force's training centre in Keston near Kent on one of the hottest days of the year.

Their handler is thought to have left his post at 12.25pm, shortly after the dogs were found and was later seen by colleagues in south east London, with hand injuries.

He is still receiving medical treatment in hospital for those injuries.

Both the Metropolitan Police and RSPCA have are now investigating.

The Metropolitan Police animals, a German Shepherd puppy and working Belgian Malinois, died at the vets.
