Investigators are still probing the cause of a huge oil blaze in Hoo at the weekend.

Firefighters are working with officers from Kent Police to establish how the inferno at a depot on Kingsnorth Industrial Estate took hold.

Staff from the Environment Agency were also continuing to clear up the site this afternoon.

More than 80 firefighters from across the county, as well as specialist units drafted in from Essex and London, worked through the night after two road oil tankers caught alight on Friday.

The fire began just after 11pm on a waste oil storage site near the major power station and initially involved the tankers. But it quickly spread to the depot yard where 1,000 litre plastic oil storage containers and 200 litre steel oil drums caught light.

It caused burning oil to flow onto nearby land that had been cleared for development.

Firefighters worked to prevent the fire spreading to three nearby industrial units, while others surrounded the fire using the foam units.

The fire was eventually brought under control just before 8am on Saturday.
