A group campaigning for a new community centre to be built wants to hold a public meeting - but cannot find a place big enough.

The irony has not been lost on supporters of the Weald Centre Group (WCG), which wants to redevelop the old council offices in Cranbrook High Street into a community complex.

WCG wants to book a hall for a meeting in mid-January, when it will reveal the results of a survey it has conducted.

Howard Cox said the group’s initial findings showed some “very interesting and surprising trends” as to what people wanted.

He said: “The latest opinion poll showed that 82 per cent of the 600 respondents believed Tunbridge Wells council, which owns the offices, has handled the issue poorly.”

The council wanted to build a community hall on the site of Cranbrook library, but Kent County Council pulled out of the scheme after the town’s parish council withdrew its support.

Of the public meeting, Mr Cox added: “Paradoxically, the survey team is now looking to find a hall to have the public meeting as there is not one big enough.”
