Security guard tackles suspected shoplifter
EXCLUSIVE
by Harry Low
This dramatic footage shows the moment
a security guard tackles a suspected shoplifter before being
attacked himself.
Security officer Ben Forrest, 20, of
Wellington Street, was working at Tesco Metro in Gravesend
town centre when he chased after a man with a case of beer, who
threatened Ben.
After catching up with him in the St
George's Centre, he was then apparently set upon by another man
who attempts to free the suspected thief.
Police confirmed no arrests have been
made.
The incident, which took place last
Wednesday, October 19 at 2.50pm, has led to the security guard Ben
Forrest, 20, being sacked by Total Security Services (TSS), who
Tesco employ to run their security.
He claims his employers told him he
used "unreasonable force". He said: "It's just wrong".
"I’m put out to be honest – it’s
stupid.
"It’s not fair because I've seen a lot
of other people use more serious force than this.
"I have friends who work at Tesco - I
loved working at that store.
"I just want to get my job back to be
honest.
"I'm annoyed because I like working in
the town centre.
"I don't want to stop working in
security - it's the only thing I've ever done.
"Staff used to say 'I feel safe when
Ben's working'."
The former checkout employee also
revealed he may be unable to pay rent as a result of losing his
job.
"I might have to move out of my house
as I'm going to find it hard to live.
"My union rep is backing me up all the
way.
"If what I did was that
serious why wasn't I arrested?"
TSS refused to comment.
A spokesman for Kent police said: "It
was reported that a man had been detained for shoplifting by
security guards.
"Following enquiries by police
officers it was discovered no offences had been committed."
