Jack Payne insists the Gillingham players won’t be giving up on their promotion hopes without a fight.
The Gills have seven games remaining to save their season, starting with a home match against Macclesfield on Saturday.
Defeat on Tuesday at Burton leaves them as outsiders to make the League 2 play-offs but Payne and the team haven’t stopped believing.
"It’s still possible and we won’t stop until it’s mathematically impossible," said the 20-year-old midfielder.
"We still believe we can make the play-offs. We want to get into the play-offs, there is no doubt about that and we want to be playing at a higher level and so we won’t stop trying."
Tuesday’s defeat at Burton was a major blow to their aspirations and Payne was disappointed to have come away with nothing, after making a steady start to the match.
He said: "It was disappointing. We looked comfortable in the first half and in the second it went the opposite and we just didn’t build on it.
"We let in a sloppy goal and just didn’t get back up after that. That killed us."
