Alarm bells rang in clock-collecting circles when this early 18th century brass lantern clock engraved with a Tudor rose turned up in a sale at the Canterbury Auction Galleries.
A rare survivor from about 1700, it was found in a Canterbury house dating from the same period and after further research, auctioneer Tony Pratt was convinced everything about it was original.
Clock collectors were excited by the discovery agreed and after heated bidding, it sold for £4,200 - more than twice what was expected.
Now Tony and his specialist Tina Rackham are looking to find more rarities like it. They will be holding a discovery and valuation day at the saleroom at 40 Station Road West on Saturday, April 2, specifically for owners of clocks, watches, scientific instruments and collectors' items.
Valuations are free of charge but since the auction process means there is no upper limit to what an antique or work of art can fetch, people are often only too keen to sell. Consignments are currently being accepted for the next two-day sale of fine art and antiques in May.
The valuation session runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm. To make an appointment or for further information, please contact Chris Wacker at the saleroom on 01227 763337.
If an item is too large or difficult to take the saleroom, or for a more private consultation, a member of the valuation team will be happy to visit your home.
