James Tredwell was "delighted but shocked" after his surprise England call-up this week for the Test series against South Africa.

The 27-year-old offspinner was originally added to the one-day squad as cover for Graeme Swann, who was troubled by a side strain, before he
and Joe Denly joined up with the England Performance squad – including team-mate Amjad Khan – in
Pretoria.

The trio were due to return home on Wednesday but Tredwell is staying on, with the England management still concerned about Swann’s fitness, despite playing in the First Test at Centurion.

Tredwell said: "Andy Flower pulled me aside after training on Monday to tell me the news and I was delighted but slightly shocked."

"Swanny has done brilliantly since he came into the side and I have got a lot to do to dislodge him."

Tredwell’s 69 Championship wickets played a big part in helping Kent regain their Division 1 status and he added: "The recognition is reward for a good season, after an average one the year before."

Kent team director Paul Farbrace said: "I’m delighted for Treddy and it’s great news for the county because he is Kent born-and-bred and developed through the Kent system."
