Azhar Mahmood has been released by Kent to play in the Sri Lankan Premier League until the end of August.

His 2013 contract has also been scrapped, although he could still play t20 cricket for the Spitfires next season.

All-rounder Mahmood, 37, was given permission to leave after being picked up by Wayamba United and he flew out on Wednesday.

Kent chief executive Jamie Clifford (pictured) said: "It’s all come about rather quickly but Azhar submitted a request and the club have agreed he can go out to Sri Lanka for the remainder of the tournament before rejoining Kent for the end of the season.

"You look to have a good working relationship with every player. Azhar is clearly able to pick up t20 contracts, having played in New Zealand, India and now Sri Lanka.

"We’ve rubbed along well together over the years so we’re happy for him to go."

Mahmood had a contract at the St Lawrence for 2013 but his increasing t20 commitments mean the situation has changed.

Clifford added: "He was contracted for 2013 in all forms of cricket but he’s likely to miss a fair chunk of the season playing in India and Sri Lanka so it ceases to be a relevant contract.

"We have an agreement that if he plays t20 cricket for anyone in this country then it will be at Kent but that’s an issue for further down the line."
