Welling manager Jamie Day has insisted he was right to let keeper Craig Ross play against his side on Saturday.

Ross (pictured) featured for the Wings against Gillingham in the Kent Senior Cup earlier this month.

But he returned to Hampton on Wednesday and then produced a man-of-the-match display at Park View Road.

Despite the heroics, Welling still claimed a 2-1 victory to avoid Day any embarrassment.

"We let Craig re-sign for Hampton last Wednesday as we can't take him," said Day. "Hampton is more local to him, and he can get regular football there at the moment.

"I don't want to stop anyone from playing, it was the right thing to do, although if he had been outstanding and we hadn't won then maybe I'd have questioned myself."

Day also praised striker Andy Pugh, who took his tally for the season to 12 with a stunning winner against Hampton.

There have still been no offers for the former Gillingham striker, who Day rates as the best striker in Blue Square Bet South.

"It was a great goal and as I keep saying, I'm sure someone will like what he is doing before long," said Day.

"As far as I'm aware there have been no approaches, he needs to keep working hard on his game and hopefully, for him, something will come along.

"He is the best striker in this league. Andy needs to be looking at going full-time in the Football League - that's what he should be aiming for."
