FBI says it has identified Islamic State killer Jihadi John, whose British accent betrays possible Kent roots

Intelligence agencies tonight say they know the identity of the Islamic State terrorist Jihadi John.

John - who may be from Kent - featured in three chilling videos in which he murdered American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and British aid worker David Haines.

James Comey, Director of the FBI, told CNN today that the bureau has identified the Islamic State militant.

But Mr Comey said the FBI will not reveal John's real name or nationality at this stage.

In the three videos Jihadi John is dressed in black clothes that conceal his features.

But experts have been studying his speech patterns, accent and other clues to determine who he really is.

They have suggested he is most likely to come from South London, Kent or Essex.
