OYEZ, OYEZ! Broadstairs and St Peter’s is on the look out for a new town crier.

A competition to select a replacement for Paul Conyers-Silverthorn, who is retiring due to poor health, will be held at the town council chamber at Pierremont Hall on Saturday, February 28 from 11am.

A town council spokeswoman said: “Paul has done a splendid job in the last few years but has decided he has to step down. We thank him for his fine work in rekindling this tradition in the town.

“The competition is open to anyone aged between 18 and 75 who is active, outgoing and has a voice that will carry a considerable distance.

“The commitment is usually up to three hours a week during the main summer period between May and September and there is a small remuneration.

“A uniform and bell will be provided and there are sometimes other bookings for outside events that also require a town crier to make appropriate announcements.”

Competition judges are expected to include town mayor Cllr Zita Wiltshire, Mr Conyers-Silverthorn, and Cllr Jeffrey Kirkpatrick, chairman of the town council leisure and tourism committee.
