Kent athletes face tough competition in Southern Inter-Counties Junior Championships

Kent finished seventh from 19 teams in the Southern Inter-Counties Junior Championships at Abingdon on Saturday.

Hampshire won the match from Oxfordshire and Middlesex. Hertfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey also finished ahead of the Kent squad.

Tadgh Healy of Tonbridge AC was second in the 400m (50.27) and Robbie Farnham-Rose (pictured) of Tonbridge won the 800m (1.55.83). Mark Cryer of Medway and Maidstone was fourth in the 110m hurdles (15.87, PB) and third in the 400m hurdles (57.56). Jamie Bryant of Tonbridge was second in the 2000m steeplechase (6.34.34).

In the field events there was a fifth for Jesper Hallberg of Tonbridge in the pole vault (3.60) and fourth place for Cryer in the long jump (6.20). Stephen Sage of Medway and Maidstone triple jumped 12.60 metres for seventh place. Tim Billings of Dartford Harriers was sixth in the discus (36.17) and Chris Blandford of Ashford AC was sixth in the javelin (47.31).

The women’s events featured some fine sprinting by Cambridge Harriers’ Daryll Nieta, second in the 100m (11.91) and Ruth Onyekwe, fourth over 200m (25.46). Caroline Hatley of Ashford AC was fourth in the 100m hurdles (15.90) and Emily Hosker-Thornhill of Invicta East Kent was third in the 1500m (4.43.07). Sophie Ayre of Medway and Maidstone was sixth in the long jump (5.09) and Frances Read of Blackheath and Bromley was fifth in the triple jump (10.82).

In non-scoring events for under-15 athletes there were several notable results by Kent’s future stars. Maya Bruney of Blackheath and Bromley won the girl’s 100m (12.35) and 200m (25.15), finishing ahead of Tonbridge athlete Rose Hairs (26.18) in the longer race. Bobby Clay of Invicta was six seconds clear of her nearest rivals in the girl’s 1500m (4.34.43). Ailis McGovern of Bexley won the girl’s pole vault (3.30).

Joe Clark of Medway and Maidstone was fourth in the high jump (1.70) and ninth in the shot (11.28) and Toby Redman of Tonbridge was fourth in the discus (41.86).
