Kent captain James Tredwell says he has 'no expectations' of adding to his single England Test cap despite being summoned to New Zealand as cover for the injured Graeme Swann.

The 31-year-old played a solitary Test against Bangladesh in 2010 but despite being involved in the one-day set-up for England’s this winter's tours of India and New Zealand, the spinner said: "I’ve got no expectations at all. I pretty much won’t know what they’re thinking until I get there."

Tredwell (pictured) is due to fly out on Thursday night and said: "Swanny needs his op and they need someone to replace him. Just because he’s out doesn’t mean I’m going to play.

"Spinners haven’t generally done very well down there, it’s more of a seamer-friendly area. Monty Panesar is the man in possession (of a starting place) and he’s done a good job, he’s experienced, he’s played something like 40 Tests."

Despite Swann set to be sidleined until ‘early summer’ after an elbow operation in the United States, and the first Ashes Test against Australia due to begin on July 10, Tredwell added: "That’s high-level sport, injuries give opportunities to others, but you have to put that kind of thing to the back of your mind.

"You just have to put yourself in the best position and the only way you can do that is to perform when you get the opportunity."
