Kent castle comes under attack - in video

At first the Roundheads were thwarted, but a second offensive saw them storm a Kent castle and slaughter all the Cavaliers inside - and we caught it all on camera.

Upnor Castle, near Rochester, was the setting for a dramatic depiction of the Kentish uprising of 1648.

In the summer of that year, the people of Kent rose up against the rule of the Army and Parliament. And re-enactors from the Sir Marmaduke Rawdon's Regiment of Foote, part of the English Civil War Society, portrayed how the Kentish rebels lived and prepared for battle.

Watch our video - filmed and edited by Steve Bodycomb - of the soldiers and their families getting ready for war...and of course the battle itself. There were two main battles over the weekend event. The first of which, on Saturday, saw the Cavaliers beat off an attempt by the Roundheads to capture the castle.

However, on Sunday, the Roundheads attacked the castle again, this time managing to breach the gates.
