Kent County Council in fight for strike compensation

Transport chiefs from Kent have travelled to Westminster today to urge the Government to seek legal advice over strikes in France that have cost the UK economy millions of pounds.

Industrial action at the Port of Calais has meant Operation Stack being brought in twice so far this year on the M20.

This afternoon 50 delegates will be speaking to members of the House of Lords calling them to seek compensation from the French Government.

They believe the French have breached EU rules governing the free movement of people and goods.

The Kent Federation of Small Business says each day of strike action costs the UK haulage industry a million pounds. They also say the economy loses half a million a day as a result of delayed deliveries and commuter traffic diversions.

Following a letter written addressed to him, Mr Mandelson said he would take up the issue and says the British Government has written to the French Government to express its concerns.

Kent County Council Leader Paul Carter said: “The closure of Calais is harming our economy. This cannot continue. The misery caused to tens of thousands of Kent people affected by the strikes and the impact on business and travel plans should not be underestimated.

“I am pleased that Lord Mandelson is speaking to the French Government about this issue. We need to continue to press for a long-term solution to the problem.”
