Kent took just five points from their rain-affected LV= County Championship match with Hampshire at Tunbridge Wells.
The game finished in a draw on Saturday after rain effectively made it a one innings per side match following an imaginative declaration.
Both teams forfeited an innings to leave Kent with a chase of more than 300 in a minimum of 70 overs on the final day but a flurry of wickets in the middle of the afternoon saw them shut up shop in pursuit of an unlikely victory.
Kent skipper Rob Key won the delayed toss and elected to field first in the search of bowling bonus points. By the end of day one, Kent had one in the bag as Mark Davies struck twice and Charlie Shreck once to leave the visitors 37-3 at one stage. They recovered to 303-8 when they declared on the fourth day, thanks largely to an unbeaten 134 from Liam Dawson.
He shared in a partnership of 99 with Simon Katich and, despite Matt Coles picking up two wickets, Kent had to be content with just two bonus points to Hampshire’s three.
Both teams then forfeited an innings, leaving Kent to chase down 304 to win. Rob Key went for 35 but Sam Northeast (pictured) showed signs of his best form with 79 to anchor the Kent reply.
Ben Harmison struggled to 11 and had the decision to promote Darren Stevens (27) and Matt Coles (18) higher up the order paid off with more significant contributions then it might have been a different story.
Overseas batsmen Brendon Nash hit two boundaries before falling for 18, leaving Mike Powell and Geraint Jones to see out the final overs without alarm before the captain’s shook hands on a draw.
Kent will be hoping for better weather tomorrow (Tuesday) night when they host Sussex in the first game of their Friends Life t20 campaign at Tunbridge Wells.
