Kent County Cricket Club batsman Sam Northeast writes exclusively for the KM Group

It is nice to be able to write this after our first Friends Life t20 win against Glamorgan in Cardiff at the weekend.

It was a much better feeling leaving South Wales than we had a month ago after losing in the Championship there, even though it was a long trip home, not arriving back at Canterbury until around 3am.

What a start Wahab Riaz made at the weekend, as he and our other new overseas Charl Langeveldt bowled superbly at the finish and left us with a chaseable target, which we were happy about, especially after the start they made.

It was 89-4 when Wahab walked out and the first thing he said was we were going to win the game.

Bearing in mind I had never seen him bat before, I didn’t know what to expect.

My own game plan was to strike the ball hard into the gaps and pick up as many runs as possible. I soon realised Wahab’s way was to continually hit the ball over the ropes.

The SWALEC Stadium is a massive ground and they were right back on the boundary but I can only dream about hitting the ball that far.

I think we worked well together in the partnership and were pleased to be there at the end, taking us through to our first win in this season’s competition.

Confidence is everything in cricket and we must be looking to take the same mindset going into this week’s games including back-to-back matches against Sussex on Friday night and Middlesex the following night, in the first game under the new permanent floodlights at St Lawrence.

Keysey spoke to us after the game at Cardiff and told us we have got a lot going for us in this competition. We are a good team and the pressure is off. Nobody expects us to do well, which is a nice feeling but it means we can go out and express ourselves.

There is no doubt that the South Group is the harder of the two, and it is going to be tough but hopefully we will finish in the top four at the end of the group stages.

It will be a late night at Canterbury on Saturday, and we then head straight to London for an overnight stay.

Just to make things more interesting, we begin a four-day championship match against Middlesex at Lord’s the following morning.

There will be no time to prepare but t20 success can really help your confidence and hopefully I will be as positive when I am talking to you next week.

There is one thing I need to do – buy some new DVDs to watch on away trips.

Darren Stevens’ collection is appalling. But it’s a busy time with so many games, so I may have to leave that for another week.
