Azhar Mahmood has got his wish after Kent offered the club’s player-of-the year a new two-year deal.

The former Pakistan all-rounder has been holding out for a longer deal and it is believed he is in the process of putting pen to paper on a new contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2013 season.

The 36-year-old was rewarded after a season that saw him top the list of Kent’s run scorers in the Friends Life t20 with 485 runs at an average of 40.41, which included a thrilling unbeaten 106 in just 57 balls against Gloucestershire at Beckenham.

Mahmood, who joined Kent from Surrey in 2007, was also top wicket-taker in the Clydesdale Bank 40 with 18 victims, while he scored 521 runs at an average of 52.1 in 13 innings playing in the LV= County Championship.

Veteran seamer Simon Cook is also believed to be on the verge of signing a new one-year deal although rumours that he will be employed as a player/coach next season are wide of the mark.

Kent have also offered a contract to former Glamorgan batsman Michael Powell and are expecting to complete the signing in the next week. It’s also believed the county are not interested in signing off-spinner Jamie Dalrymple, who was released by Middlesex at the end of last season.
