A former Kent golf boss who admitted trying to sell weapon parts to Iran has been jailed for 33 months in America.

Retired businessman Christopher Tappin had previously denied selling batteries for surface-to-air missiles - but changed his plea as part of a deal with prosecutors in Texas.

Mr Tappin, who was president of the Kent Golf Society, was sentenced in El Paso this afternoon.

The judge said he would recommend the Department of Justice approve any request to transfer the 65-year-old to serve his sentence in Britain.

Mr Tappin, from Orpington, was also fined £7,000 for selling batteries for Iranian missiles.

He was extradited under a treaty with the US that means prosecutors can demand a suspect is handed over without the evidence ever being tested in a British court.
