Kent has the most reported potholes in the UK, a new study reveals.
Between 2018 and 2020, there were 52,425 potholes reported by the county’s residents according to an FOI request submitted by GoCompare.
That figure is almost double that of the whole of Northern Ireland, which had 30,666 reported potholes over those three years.
It also means Kent had almost 12,500 more potholes than second-place county Staffordshire, which had 40,725 potholes reported over the three-year span.
UK councils spend £99 million a year fixing the affected roads and, of that, Kent spent the second most last year at £10.5million.
This marked an increase of £400,000 on the previous year.
Despite Lancashire topping the chart at £16,318,000 spent, Kent’s expenditure was noted as the most money spent per pothole.
Out of the UK’s regions, the South East took the longest to report and repair potholes with an average of 31.3 days.
GoCompare highlighted that, while you can claim for pothole damage on your car insurance, you can also claim from the council or authority responsible for maintaining the road where the pothole damage occurred.
Kent County Council has voted to raise council tax this year with some of the extra funds going to pothole repairs.
