Several more of the county's MPs have come out against a Government move to block the publication of detailed information about their expenses.

The Government is facing widespread criticism after announcing it intends to change the law to prevent the disclosure of detailed information and receipts from MPs' expenditure.

Yesterday, we revealed how Derek Wyatt, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, intended to investigate how he could bypass the ruling and publish full details of his expenditure.

Other Kent MPs, both Labour and Conservative, have now echoed his sentiments, although one - former Labour minister Dr Steve Ladyman - has backed the move.

Faversham and Mid Kent MP Hugh Robertson (Con) said: "I am staggered we have got ourselves into this mess. Nobody would seriously dispute we need some form of allowances - but why should we try and exempt ourselves from disclosure?"

Ashford MP Damian Green (Con) said: "Under no circumstances will I be voting for this. I believe in transparency where public money is concerned and I will do whatever is required [to publish details]."

Dover MP Gywn Prosser (Lab) said: "I cannot see the justification and I will not be voting for any exemptions."

However, former Labour minister and Thanet South MP Dr Ladyman said: "The proposal allows for the continued publication of expenses broken down into categories. One of those categories is 'fixtures, fittings and furnishings'.

"This seems reasonable to me - I don't see that any public servant should have to go further."

MPs are to vote on the proposal this Thursday.
