Kent Police’s armoury of crime fighting tools has been boosted by the introduction of a police helicopter.

As part of a groundbreaking collaboration agreement between Kent and Essex Police, the existing Essex-based helicopter will be made available to both Essex and Kent for up to 20 hours a day, seven days a week. This is a considerable increase in service for Essex residents and a completely new service for Kent.

The collaboration programme, brokered between the forces and authorities in April 2007, aims to improve the efficiency and performance of both forces.

The agreement was proposed in October 2007 and has been subject to air-testing and the ratification of terms and conditions and contractual agreements.

It was formally agreed at the Joint Statutory Committee in March and contracts were signed by respective Police Authority chairs.

Ann Barnes, chair of Kent Police Authority, said: “I’m delighted we now have a dedicated new helicopter for Kent and Medway. Kent was one of only three forces without a helicopter and we always managed to buy in the service.

"However this is not feasible any more and the authority is very much aware of how important it is that we provide the force with the tools to do the job to protect the public. This is our new eye in the sky and will certainly play a key role in assisting officers on the ground with ongoing incidents.”

Kent's Chief Constable, Mike Fuller, said: "This agreement is fantastic news for Kent Police and the people of Kent. The helicopter has vital capabilities which will help us to fight crime, nuisance and disorder and help us to protect our public further, from the skies as well as the streets.”

Robert Chambers, chairman of Essex Police Authority said: “The helicopter can be used in many different ways and makes a real difference to policing.

"We know that Kent Police will find it an invaluable resource and we are delighted to have reached this agreement, which with its increased flying time, will undoubtedly benefit the public both sides of the water.”
