Kent achieved their first victory of the summer, easing to a nine-wicket win over Scotland in the Clydesdale Bank 40 in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Replying to Scotland’s 40-over total of 180-6, Joe Denly’s was the only wicket to fall, as Kent raced to their target with more than nine overs to spare.

It was Kent’s 11th attempt at victory in any form of cricket and the county’s first win in five in the 40-over format.

Key and Denly put on 72 for the first wicket at nearly a run a ball before Denly was bowled by Majid Haq for 38.

Kent captain Key was joined by Martin van Jaarsveld and together the pair (pictured together) added 111 to see Spitfires home.

Key, in a rich vein of form following his double hundred in the championship game against Durham last week, scored 67 from 75 balls, hitting seven fours.

He was outscored by van Jaarsveld who smashed nine fours and a six in a 62-ball innings of 72.

Scotland had won the toss and decided to bat first at the Citylets Grange ground. First change bowler Simon Cook took three wickets as Scotland were pegged back to 71-4.

The mainstay of the Scotland innings was an 87-run fifth-wicket stand between Richie Berrington (68) and Neil McCallum (41).

Kent welcomed back James Tredwell from England duty and Darren Stevens who missed the championship match with Durham.

All-rounder Stevens wasn’t called upon with either bat or ball, but Tredwell in his first game for the county since returning from Twenty20 duty with England in the Caribbean, helped Kent keep Scotland’s scoring in check with some typically tidy bowling.

Although he did not take a wicket, his spell of eight overs cost just 32 runs.

Cook finished with figures of 3-39 from his eight overs.

Kent return to four-day action when they take on Durham in a return LV County Championship game at the Riverside, starting on Monday.
