Kent will continue to have 17 MPs under a boundary review that means changes in some constituencies and new names for others.

The Boundary Commission proposals have left the recommendations it made last year for 11 of the county’s constituencies broadly the same.

Those recommendations were put out to consultation last October.

The one big change is confirmation that the constituency of Faversham and Mid Kent will disappear completely - with its electorate divided between other seats.

Helen Whately, who is MP for that seat, said: “I love being MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, It’s a huge honour. I have been MP here for three years. It’s not always easy but the chance to make a difference make it all worthwhile. Whatever happens in the future, I’ll continue to work hard and get on with the job of representing this constituency.”

The 11 seats unchanged from the initial Boundary Commission plans are Ashford; Dartford; Folkestone and Hythe;Gillingham and Rainham; Gravesham; Maidstone; Rochester and Strood; Sittingbourne and Sheppey; Tonbridge; Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells and Crowborough.

Changes include:

Dover is renamed ‘Dover and Deal’;

Maidstone and The Weald becomes ‘Maidstone’;

Tunbridge Wells becomes ‘Tunbridge Wells and Crowborough’ - meaning voters will come from Kent and East Sussex;

Faversham and Mid Kent disappears and is replaced by a new seat ‘Canterbury and Faversham’;

Two newly named seats in Thanet are created: East Thanet and North Kent Coastal

The shake-up is designed to even out the size of constituencies as well as to meet a commitment by the government to reduce the overall number of MPs to save money.

Faversham and Mid Kent is effectively scrapped, with Faversham itself moving into a new constituency with Canterbury, called Canterbury and Faversham, which will also include one ward, Aylesham, from the borough of Dover.

Maidstone, which is currently split between Maidstone and The Weald and Faversham and Mid-Kent, becomes much more centred on the town itself and will include Park Wood and Shepway North and South wards.

Chatham and Aylesford becomes Chatham and Malling, and will include Snodland, West Malling, East Malling, Kings Hill, Aylesford and Larkfield along with Princes Park, Walderslade, Luton and Chatham Central.

Dover is renamed Dover and Deal and takes Sandwich from what was South Thanet.

South Thanet becomes a new constituency of East Thanet which include Margate and Cliftonville.

There will be a new name for what was North Thanet, which will become North Kent Coastal. It has added Seasalter to its make-up.

There will be a name change for a seat the commission initially called Mid Kent and Ticehurst but will now be named Weald of Kent.This will include Goudhurst, Hawkhurst, Paddock Wood and Cranbrook - previously part of Tunbridge Wells.

It is for the government to decide when the new boundaries for all constituencies will come into effect but MPs will have a final say. It is possible the shake-up may get blocked as it is understood there are both Conservative and Labour MPs unhappy at the revisions.
