A Kent soldier killed in a 'friendly fire' incident has been flown home to Britain.

Sapper Mark Antony Smith was flown into RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire yesterday, before being driven through the nearby market town of Wootton Bassett.

Crowds paid their respects to him, and two other British soldiers who died trying to rescue an injured colleague in Afghanistan.

Sapper Mark Antony Smith from 36 Engineer Regiment died in a suspected "friendly fire" incident.

He was serving with 36 Engineer Regiment based in Maidstone when he was killed by 'friendly fire' in the Sangin area of Afghanistan on Monday.

He was serving with a taskforce dealing with makeshift bombs.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said of Sapper Smith earlier this week: "He died seeking to improve the lives of local Afghans. He will be sorely missed by his many friends. His sacrifice will not be forgotten. We will remember him."
