Paul Farbrace says teams must take a bold approach right from the start to be successful in Twenty20 cricket.

Kent Spitfires travel to The Brit Oval to take on Surrey Lions, and Farbrace insists that to be successful in cricket’s shortest format, calculated risks are required.

Team director Farbrace (pictured) said: "You have got to accept that you are often going to lose wickets up front because Twenty 20 is all about who is prepared to be brave and go after the game – and that applies to your bowlers and fielders just as much as the batsmen.

"If you sit back and let things happen, then the game is going to pass you by. I would rather go for it in a calculated, not reckless, way right from the start and then if you get beaten by the better team, fair enough.

"At Canterbury last Friday (when Kent were beaten by Middlesex), we couldn’t do anything about that because Adam Gilchrist played a quite magnificent innings.

"Keysy and Joe, hitting 87 off the first nine overs, set the tone against Gloucestershire (on Sunday) and then people like Alex Blake with his quickfire 33 and Simon Cook, who bowled well for his three wickets, kept the pressure on."

Kent only have two wins from their opening five Friends Provident t20 South Group matches but Farbrace is confident six more wins from their remaining 11 games will be enough to give them a top four position – and a place in the quarter-finals.
