A determined innings by Martin van Jaarsveld helped Kent Spitfires to a last-over victory against Yorkshire in the Clydesdale Bank 40 on Sunday.

The win left Kent with two wins and two defeats from their four games, two points behind Group A leaders Sussex, who visit Canterbury on Sunday.

Replying to Yorkshire's 230-7, in which Ajmal Shahzad top scored with an unbeaten 59, Kent slumped to 137-5 in the 25th over.

Matt Coles had kept them in the game with 47 from 38 balls, including six fours and one six, and van Jaarsveld (pictured) raised hopes with 74 off 65 balls, with 10 fours - including five in a row in one over off Shahzad.

The Yorkshire bowler finally had his revenge, bowling van Jaarsveld to leave Kent 195-6 in the 33rd over.

Azhar Mahmood went without scoring but Geraint Jones, 39, and James Tredwell, 12 not out, added 30 for the eighth wicket, leaving Ashley Shaw to hit the winning boundary off the fourth ball of the final over.

Having put Yorkshire in, Kent had restricted them to 179-7, but Shahzad raised the stakes with a late flourish, with eight fours and three sixes.

He had a narrow escape in the final over when wicketkeeper Jones just failed to hold on to a skied shot, and went on to add another six and two fours.

Darren Stevens was Kent's most effective bowler, taking 2-27 from his eight overs, with Alex Blake taking two wickets in his two overs, one a maiden and the other costing 13 runs.
