Kent suffered their worst Championship finish in 16 years after an eight wicket defeat to Glamorgan in the first-ever Championship game played under lights.

The visitors wrapped up victory with a session to spare after next-to-bottom Kent began the final day 38 runs behind on 148-5.

Azhar Mahmood (pictured) cracked seven fours and a six before becoming Will Bragg’s maiden first class wicket when he botched an attempted cut having made 70 while Geraint Jones top-scored with 79 as the hosts posted 312 all-out.

Veteran spinner Dean Cosker (4-106) was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers as his side were set a target of 127 to win.

It took them just 20 overs to reach 129-2, led by Alviro Petersen's 70 not out from 54 balls.

Joe Denly’s fine finish to the season had continued in the first innings as he amassed a patient 69, however Mahmood (34) was the only one to stick with him, putting on 59 for the fifth wicket, while Jones came in to make a stoic 48 to help his side reach 237 all-out.

The visitors survived a short stint facing the pink ball under lights in damp conditions on the opening night unscathed, and made inroads the following day, Gareth Rees making 54 and Mark Wallace 57 in support of Stewart Walters superb six-hour 147.

The visitors eventually declared on 423-9 with Mahmood, Matt Coles, Adam Riley and Adam Ball collecting two wickets apiece.

An uphill struggle became even harder when Denly was stumped for just 17 at the start of Kent’s reply, but Sam Northeast made 51 before Mahmood and Jones came together to steer Kent away from the threat of an innings defeat and eventually help them past 300.
