England's most picturesque towns, villages and cities have been revealed - and Kent has more than anywhere else in the country.

Canterbury, Ramsgate and Sandwich were all recognised in the top 10 list compiled by luxury homeware company OKA.

It took into account the number of listed buildings and places of interest in each area, including heritage gardens, parks and tourist attractions.

Canterbury, famed for its towering cathedral and cobbled streets, came second on the list - just behind Bath in Somerset.

The city has 593 listed buildings and is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was followed by Sandwich, in sixth place, and Ramsgate in seventh.

David Curtis-Brignell, deputy chief executive of Visit Kent, said: "We’re delighted that Kent’s towns and cities have been recognised as some of the most beautiful in England.

"In Canterbury, Ramsgate and Sandwich visitors can enjoy a wonderful combination of individual character, rich history, and architectural finery.

"Whether it’s due to the charming cobbles of Canterbury, the maritime heritage of Ramsgate or the beautifully preserved timber-houses of Sandwich, there is no doubt that these are some of the most picturesque spots in the UK.

"Our stunning corner of the country is full of delightfully scenic cities, towns and villages, so we invite visitors to come and discover them for themselves – and come into the Garden of England."

A spokesman for Canterbury City Council said: "We are really proud others have recognised what we've known all along - Canterbury is a gorgeous place to live, work and study in.

"There are whole multitude of reasons why people should visit the city - where history lurks around every corner.

"Canterbury boasts modern buildings like the Marlowe Theatre, and the countryside around the city is the epitome of what the Garden of England has to offer.

"It also boasts vibrant nightlife, more opportunities to immerse yourself in cultural activities than you can shake a stick at and is a fantastic place to shop.

Cllr Ash Ashbee, cabinet member for coastal development at Thanet council, said: "We are delighted that Ramsgate has been included in the English top 10 list.

"Boasting the UK’s only Royal Harbour, it is incredibly picturesque and holds a wealth of historic past.

"There are a number of architectural gems in the town including the Italianate Glasshouse and Pugin’s Grange.

"Later on in the year it’s possible to spend the day in Ramsgate and catch sunrise as it comes from the horizon on the sea and then as it sets over the harbour.

"It’s a very special location."

Cllr Keith Morris, leader of Dover District Council said: "We are delighted that Sandwich has been recognised as one of the ten most picturesque places in England.

"Sandwich has been described as "one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Britain" with an amazing range of historic attractions.

"Sandwich is a beautiful town, with a rich history and a strong sense of community.

"With many local events, championship golf courses, walking routes and attractions, there's always plenty to see and do."
