More on KentOnline
There are many things that Kent is famous for but a little known fact is that it's home of the OXO cube.
It was developed and launched 100 years ago by the Gunther family at their Tongswood Estate in Hawkhurst.
Charles Gunther was chairman of the Lieburg’s Extract of Meat Company when the product was developed.
Due to its supposed health qualities there were a number of meat extract products on the market and Gunther wanted to produce a more affordable version.
The liquid form of OXO came first in the late 1800s before he perfected the now famous cube in 1910.
His former home in Hawkhurst is now St Ronan’s School and a series of events are taking place there this weekend.
There will be a display of OXO products from the last century and a local produce market.
It is all part of the village’s ‘Beefing it Up’ festival to mark the centenary.
