She has served all over the world to ferry Royal Marines into
battle.

But it was not in a war zone that HMS Ocean turned heads today -
when she sailed past Gravesend.

The Royal Navy's biggest ship brought out spectators this
morning as she made her way up the River Thames for the start of
the security operations for the Olympic Games.

At 667ft long and weighing in at 21,500 tonnes, the
aircraft carrier dwarfed other boats.

HMS Ocean, which can carry up to 830 Royal Marines, is designed
to support amphibious landing operations.

She was part of a large Royal Navy task force deployed for
Operation Telic, the UK contribution to the 2003 Iraq War -
accompanied by the Ark Royal.

The ship was escorted by a number of smaller craft and four tugs
up the Thames.

This weekend, she will be at the centre of military activity as
they practise for terrorist threats.

During the Olympics, HMS Ocean will be moored in Greenwich to
provide logistics support, accommodation and a helicopter landing
site.
