LISTENERS helped KM-fm make the first UK Radio Aid Day, a fund-raising event in aid of the child victims of the tsunami disaster, a huge success.
On Monday, nearly 300 commercial radio stations across Britain joined forces to raise millions of pounds for the Tsunami Appeal. The total raised stood at £3,012,345 at the end of the programme and will continue to rise.
From 6am until 6pm some of the biggest names in radio history including Tony Blackburn, Dermot O'Leary, Davina McCall, Chris Evans and Simon Bates teamed up with celebrities including Kylie Minogue, Tony Blair and Duran Duran to raise money for the children affected by the Asian tsunami and support them as they to start to rebuild their lives and look to the future.
It is thought around 30 million listeners across the UK tuned in to the 12-hour broadcast to create the biggest ever UK radio audience.
Employees of businesses were encouraged to donate an hour of their wages to the fund, and some managers and owners of local businesses went even further and pledged this on behalf of their employees.
Staff at KM-fm, the Kent Messenger Group's five radio stations, also did their bit for the appeal. They had a dress-down day, with staff donating cash and many donating a hour's wages.
There was also a swear box in many of the offices, while KM-fm's cruiser crew was out visiting schools.
