Knifeman jailed for repeated stabbing

A knifeman who stabbed a man three times was locked up for almost five years on Friday.

Christopher Salman was sentenced to four years and eight months in a young offenders' institution after a judge at Maidstone Crown Court decided, following "careful and anxious" deliberation, that the 20-year-old poses a significant risk of serious harm.

For that reason, Judge Charles Macdonald QC ordered that upon his release Salman will also be subject to an extended licence period for three years.

"I am in absolutely no doubt that this case clearly falls into the category of premeditated wounding," he told the court, "with the use of a weapon, carried to the scene with specific intent."

Salman, of Garden Street, Gillingham, admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is serving three-and-a-half years for robbery and the latest sentence will not start until that ends.

Salman lashed out at victim Ferdi Aram with a lock knife in August 2007. The two men knew each other and began to argue.

The court heard Salman, who had been drinking whisky and taking drugs, rubbed Mr Aram's baseball cap across his face. Mr Aram responded by punching Salman before suggesting that they both "cool it".

Mr Aram later told the police Salman's response, however, was to threaten: "I am going to cut your face up with a knife. You have made the biggest mistake of your life."

Salman left the flat, but returned 10 minutes later and attacked Mr Aram with the knife he was said to habitually carry.

Mr Aram suffered three wounds to his left abdomen, left chest and left armpit. He was said to be "bleeding copiously" but his wounds were not deep or life-threatening.

Andrew Caldwell, defending, said Salman had acted out of character and was provoked "in part" by Mr Aram hitting him. He added that Salman returned to the flat where he attacked Mr Aram "in shame and anger".
