Motorists can expect more disruption today as the last two shipments of wind turbines leave Medway at least for the time being.

The first of the giant turbine blades left Chatham Docks headed for a new wind farm on Romney Marsh, near Ashford a week ago.

The spectacular sight of three massive propellers could be seen leaving the port in Pier Road under police escort and making its way to the Medway Tunnel and on to the Wainscott bypass before turning onto the M2 to continue its journey through Kent.

A total of 78 vehicles are involved in the shipments – 21 of these abnormal loads have already been escorted down to Romney Marsh.

There was two slow-moving convoys every day last week – each involving three vehicles, and the last of these is due to take place today.

Six Kent Police motorcyclists and one car escorted each movement, which left the docks at 5am and noon to avoid peak times.

Each vehicle was about 47 metres long and their journey took between two and three hours.

After today, there will be no more movements of the propeller blades until the next shipment arrives, likely to be early July.

A spokesman for Kent Police, said: “Each load has passed without incident and with very minor congestion along the route.”

Motorists are urged to listen to local radio travel bulletins before setting on Tune into kmfm at 107.9fm and 100.4fm for traffic updates.
