Maidstone's plans for next season have been given a boost by the news that talisman Shaun Welford has turned down a lucrative move in favour of staying with the Stones for their return home.
United’s 31-goal leading scorer (pictured) was offered the chance to join Ryman League Division 1 South champions Whitehawk ahead of their step-up to the Premier Division next season.
Player-manager Jay Saunders said: "Whitehawk wanted to take Shaun to play in the next division but he’s said he’s going to stay.
"I am really pleased because he’s a family man and their offer was very persuasive – I’d have understood if he’d taken it. I’m delighted we have got him on board for another season."
Saunders revealed he had also received assurances from another senior player that he would remain with the Stones rather than join a higher-level team.
He said: "It’s the busiest time of the year and I’d like to get as much done early on as I can. Hopefully the player-turnover won’t be as high as last year. I think there are maybe four or five who will be going.
"There are a few tough decisions to make, but you just have to get on with it and the players have to deal with it.
"Players want to know what’s going on as soon as possible. If they’re going they can start sorting themselves out for next season and if they’re staying then they can get on with enjoying their summer."
