Leaving Rowan Vine out of the Gillingham side to face Swindon Town was a 'tough call' admits Andy Hessenthaler

The decision to leave Rowan Vine out of the starting 11 to face Swindon was a tough one, admitted Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler.

On-loan QPR striker Vine (pictured) had looked bright after starting the last three matches, but Hessenthaler had mifielders Charlie Lee and Danny Jackman back fit. It meant he had a decision to make.

"That was a real tough call," said Hessenthaler. "I ended up not picking the team until the last minute. When I am not 100% sure as a manager and, I am sure most will say the same, you sleep on it.

"We named the team just before the game and I said that to him (Vine). He was disappointed, he wanted to play."

Vine was introduced with 16 minutes left.

"It’s not easy to then come on in games like that, but he has been great since he has been here," Hessenthaler said.

The Gills boss remained faithful with Danny Kedwell, despite the striker failing to find the net in eight appearances, and he was rewarded when he scored the opener to take his season tally to 14.

Hessenthaler said: "Everyone has a barren spell, even the best forwards in the world, so I am pleased for him. The goal set us on our way."
