AN ANIMAL resembling a Black Leopard has been seen in countryside in the Gravesend area.

Recently, following two sightings near Meopham, a woman from Shorne saw what is likely to be the same animal while she was walking her dog on a country pathway.

It was 8pm when she saw the animal bound off across a nearby field and head for woods. She described the animal as the size of a large fox but longer in the body and jet black in colour.

Dog walkers are the most likely people to see such animals as they are often in secluded areas where large cats lay up.

Neil Arnold, from the Big Cat Research group, said: "If you encounter a large cat close at hand do not run from the animal.

Attacks on humans are extremely rare, but with populations of large cats such as Leopard and Puma exploding, attacks in the future may occur, especially if cats are wounded or cornered.

"While walking in woods, pay attention to how your dog reacts, make a slight noise, and always stand your ground and make yourself as big as possible."
