WE WANT to see Canterbury blooming. That’s the message from a group of committed campaigners who are determined to use flower power to brighten up the city’s streets.

Backed by the Kentish Gazette and its sister radio station kmfm for Canterbury, the Canterbury City Partnership (CCP) is sowing the seeds for success in the South and South East In Bloom scheme next year.

Bob Jones, chairman of the organisation that brings together city centre business leaders, said: "Our beautiful city is a complex place which is owned by lots of different people – its residents, businesses, students as well as tourists and is home to our World Heritage Site attractions.

"Flowers have the potential to focus our minds and bring us all together.

"Our aim is for Canterbury to win a gold medal in the regional awards within five years, and then progress towards national and international recognition."

The CCP has pulled together a steering group that is spearheading the bid and includes representatives from local businesses, community groups, voluntary organisations, educational establishments and Canterbury City Council.

The judges assess entries which are submitted in February next year on the basis of horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.

They then visit towns and cities to look around in early July. The awards ceremony takes place in early September.

Mr Jones added: "Canterbury is already home to some beautiful places, many of them hidden away or taken for granted.

"There are lots of ways residents, businesses and voluntary groups can get involved and make Canterbury look blooming marvellous next year – with bulbs, flowers, trees, wildflower meadows, gardens walks, hanging baskets and window boxes."

"With so much potential on our doorstep, if we all work together I am sure we will soon be celebrating."

The CCP has worked closely with Whitefriars and the Canterbury Beekeepers to bring bees into the city centre.

Two hives are now on top of Whitefriars, and the bees will be doing their bit for Canterbury in Bloom by pollinating flowers, plants and trees in and around the city centre.
