POLICE are still searching for the mother of a new-born baby girl found abandoned in a telephone box.

The baby, believed to have been only four to six hours old when she was discovered, was wrapped in a pink blanket.

She was left in a phone box in Farnborough, near Orpington. She had been bathed and washed.

Det Insp Damian Allain, of the Metropolitan police’s child protection command, has led attempts to find her mother.

He stressed that the mother’s welfare was uppermost in officers’ minds and urged her or anyone who may know her identity to come forward.

“Anyone with information about the identity of the child’s mother or anyone who may have noticed a woman in the latter stages of pregnancy who is now without child is asked to come forward,” he said. “All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence.

"We understand she may still be feeling frightened and distressed but our primary concern is her welfare and the safety of her baby. The mother may need medical treatment.”

Two men walking past the telephone box found the baby at about 6.30am on Wednesday last week. She was taken to the nearby Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough.
