A litterbug has paid a high price for throwing a drinks can - more than 500 times the cost of the fizzy drink itself!
Joshua Glue, of Hectorage Road, Tonbridge was caught on CCTV dropping a can at the entrance to Tonbridge Racecourse Sportsground on New Wharf Road, Tonbridge, at 11.45am on July 5.
Glue was fined £175 by Sevenoaks magistrates for the littering offence - brought by Tonbridge and Malling Council. He was ordered to pay costs of £75 plus a victim surcharge of £15.
He was also in breach of a conditional discharge imposed in 2010, and was fined a further £80.
When all fines and costs are added up and divided by the average cost of a canned drink, Glue could have bought 575 cans for what it cost him in court.
But it's not the first time Glue's been before the courts for littering.
In 2010 he was issued with a fixed penalty notice for littering - also at Tonbridge Racecourse Sportsground.
Cllr Howard Rogers, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: "There can be no excuse for dropping litter and magistrates are taking such offences seriously, especially repeat offences such as this.
"We know that for the vast majority of Tonbridge and Malling residents littering continues to be a major concern – it looks horrible, damages the local environment and costs the council (and therefore the taxpayer) more than £1m every year to clear up.
"Our message is simple: littering is a crime and will not be tolerated in this borough."
The Council provides more than 1,000 litter bins across the borough.
