There will be no fairytale ending to Adam Gemili's debut Olympic Games.

Gemili, from Dartford, was the anchor of the British 4x100m relay team which stormed to the finish line in an incredible time of 37.9secs, second only to Jamaica.

However a botched handover between Danny Talbot and Gemili with 100m to go led to GB being disqualified.

Gemili appeared to set-off to early and despite slowing to gather the baton and finishing the race strongly, GB were soon thrown out.

A picture of disappointment after the race, Gemili said in the aftermath: "I just.... I went off and I don't know. Maybe I went a bit harder. I've got to see the video.

"It's disappointing as we ran 37.9. I think I went in the check mark maybe a tiny bit early, I put my hand back and it didn't come."

Gemili's teammate Christian Malcolm described the 18-year-old from Dartford as 'the right man for the job' to lead the relay team home.

"There's nobody better in the country to do it than him at this moment," Malcolm added.

It is the fourth time in five Games that GB have been disqualified from the event, the other time, in Athens 2004, they won gold.
