Officials from Canterbury are set to welcome dozens of athletes from the Puerto Rico Olympic team to the city later this week.

Canterbury Christ Church University will host the Caribbean country’s training camp in the lead-up to London 2012, from Friday until July 24.

More than 35 athletes, trainers, medical and support staff form the travelling party, and they will take part in the Olympic Torch Tour which will arrive in the city on July 19.

Competitors will use athletics, boxing and swimming facilities across the city in the run-up to the games and will also utilise the University’s sports and exercise laboratories for pre and post training massages and performance analysis.

The athletes will stay at the university’s campus and use the site’s catering facilities.

They will use the Body & Mind Leisure Club athletics track at Canterbury High School, the Canterbury Boxing Club gym and Kingsmead Leisure Centre during their preparation.

Among the party is Javier Culson, a 27-year-old 400m hurdler who has taken silver medals at the past two World Championships.

He will come into competition with Kent’s Jack Green – who once trained at Canterbury High – who will represent TeamGB in the event.
